Bridging the Gap: Women Leading the Charge in Affordable Housing

When we talk about education, health, and economic mobility, all roads lead back to one fundamental necessity: a safe, affordable place to call home.

In honor of Women’s History Month, the latest episode of Let's Talk About It brought together a powerhouse panel of female leaders who have dedicated their careers to making housing accessible for all. HATC CEO Patrick Howard sat down with Laura Goettsche (HATC Board Chair & Civil Rights Attorney), Debra Guerrero (Senior VP at NRP Group), and Texas State Representative Sheryl Cole to discuss the realities of the current housing market and the power of intentional partnerships.

The Travis County "Perception Gap"

Has the housing crisis in Central Texas finally cooled off? Depending on who you ask, you might get very different answers.

During the discussion, Laura Goettsche highlighted a growing "perception gap" in Travis County. Because of recent market shifts and a softening tech boom, rent prices for luxury and high-end apartments have temporarily dropped. For some, this feels like the end of the housing crisis.

However, the reality for working-class families is starkly different. The need for true affordable housing has not diminished. Legacy residents are still being priced out of neighborhoods their families have lived in for generations, and essential workers are still struggling to afford to live in the city where they work. Holding both of these truths at once is critical to understanding the ongoing work required in our community.
