AUSTIN, Texas - May 2026 – The Housing Authority of Travis County (HATC) proudly recognizes May as National Affordable Housing Month. This annual observance emphasizes the vital importance of having safe, stable, and affordable homes, which are essential for fostering strong, thriving, and equitable communities.

“Access to affordable housing is not just about having a roof overhead; it is the foundation for health, education, and economic mobility,” said Patrick B. Howard, Executive Director/CEO of HATC. “As we face rising costs in 2026, our commitment to ensuring every resident has a safe and secure place to call home is more urgent than ever.”

Key Initiatives Highlighted for Affordable Housing Month 2026:

  • Provision of Affordable Units: Maintaining and preserving the availability of 174 affordable housing units for low-income families, seniors, and individuals with disabilities across six communities in Travis County.
  • Expansion of Affordable Units: Developing new affordable housing units to address the significant shortage of rental homes for low-income families, in partnership with developers to create inclusive, mixed-income housing opportunities through HATC’s affiliate, Travis County Facilities Corporation.
  • Support for Vulnerable Residents: Administering 691 Housing Choice Vouchers and 49 Mainstream Vouchers to help seniors, families, and individuals with disabilities secure stable housing, as well as serving the needs of the unhoused through the award of Continuum of Care Grant funds.
  • Community Partnerships: Collaborating with local nonprofits to support resident empowerment and self-sufficiency through our 501(c)(3) organization – The HATC Foundation.

HATC encourages the community to engage in Affordable Housing Month by learning more about how affordable housing strengthens our local economy and communities.

About HATC:
Our mission is to create safe, affordable, and livable housing options that empower individuals and families to thrive, fostering strong, inclusive communities for generations to come. For more information, visit www.HATCTX.com.
