The Southwest Regional Council of the National Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials (SWRC NAHRO) offers a valuable scholarship program for students connected to public housing in the Southwest region.  This program provides over $10,000 annually in scholarships to assist students in pursuing post-high school education.

Who is Eligible?

The scholarship program is open to several categories of applicants:

  • Category 1: Graduating High School Seniors - Residents or Participants: This category targets graduating seniors residing in or receiving direct housing benefits from a SWNAHRO member agency.  Scholarships include a $4,000 four-year award, a $1,000 one-time award honoring Philip W. Miller, and additional awards of at least $500 for students with a 3.0 GPA and qualifying ACT/SAT scores.
  • Category 2: Children of Agency Staff:  This category is for graduating seniors who are children of agency staff. One $1,000 scholarship is available, with the possibility of additional awards depending on funding and applicants.
  • Category 3: Head of Household: Residents/participants who are heads of households and are currently attending or planning to attend college are eligible for scholarships in this category.
  • Category 4: Graduating Seniors – Nontraditional - Resident or Participant: This category focuses on non-traditional graduating seniors residing in or receiving direct housing benefits from a member agency. Two one-year scholarships of at least $500 are awarded.

Application Process:

All applicants must complete an online application and submit an agency certification form signed by the Executive Director/CEO of their housing agency.  A new requirement for all scholarship recipients is to submit a short video (one minute or less) explaining the impact of the scholarship on their future.
